Use a Chain Cleaning Device

Description

These devices clamp onto the chain and use internal brushes and a solvent reservoir to scrub the chain as you backpedal.

Recipe/Instructions

1. Purchase a chain cleaning device (e.g., Park Tool Cyclone, Finish Line Chain Cleaner).
2. Fill the device's reservoir with bicycle degreaser according to its instructions.
3. Clamp the device onto the lower run of the chain.
4. Hold the device steady with one hand and turn the crank backward with the other hand for 20-30 rotations.
5. The internal brushes scrub the chain as it passes through the degreaser bath.
6. Remove the device, dispose of the dirty degreaser properly.
7. Rinse the chain thoroughly with water.
8. Dry and lubricate the chain as described in Solution 1 (Steps 5-7).
