Clean Thoroughly, Use Baking Soda/Charcoal, and Vinegar Wipe
4
Description
Removing the odor source and using natural absorbers/neutralizers is key to eliminating car smells.
Recipe/Instructions
- Remove Source: Thoroughly clean the car interior. Remove all trash, old food wrappers, empty bottles, sports equipment, wet items, etc.
- Vacuum: Vacuum carpets, floor mats, and upholstery (including under seats) meticulously to remove odor-trapping debris.
- Baking Soda/Charcoal: Sprinkle baking soda generously on carpets and fabric upholstery. Let it sit for several hours or overnight, then vacuum thoroughly. Alternatively, place an open box of baking soda or a container of activated charcoal briquettes (plain, no lighter fluid) under a seat or in a cup holder to continuously absorb odors.
- Vinegar Wipe: For lingering smells (like smoke or mildew), lightly dampen a microfiber cloth with a 50/50 mixture of white vinegar and water. Wipe down hard surfaces like the dashboard, door panels, and console. The vinegar smell will dissipate as it dries, neutralizing many odors. Test on an inconspicuous area first.
- Cabin Air Filter: Check and replace the cabin air filter if it's dirty, as it can trap odors.
- Ventilate: Leave windows cracked open slightly when parked in a safe area to allow fresh air circulation.
