Start slowly and use steady downward pressure

4

Mark your drilling point with a center punch, start the drill at the lowest speed setting, and apply firm, steady downward pressure without forcing. Let the bit establish the hole before gradually increasing speed. Keep both hands on the drill and your body aligned directly above it.

Why It Works

Most crooked holes happen in the first 1/4 inch when the bit wanders before fully engaging. Slow speed gives you time to correct alignment. Once the hole is established, the bit naturally follows its own path straight down.

Tips

  • A center punch dimple is critical — it gives the bit a seat to start in rather than skating across the surface
  • Position your body directly over the drill so you're pushing straight down, not at an angle
  • Use a corded drill or set a cordless to its lowest speed/torque setting
  • Practice on scrap material first to develop the feel before drilling your actual workpiece
