Change diapers frequently to minimize moisture exposure
5
Change your baby's diaper as soon as it is wet or soiled. Prolonged contact with urine and stool is the primary cause of diaper rash, as moisture breaks down the skin barrier and enzymes in stool irritate exposed skin.
Why It Works
The AAP identifies prolonged moisture contact as the leading cause of diaper dermatitis. Urine raises skin pH, which activates fecal enzymes (lipases and proteases) that damage the skin. Frequent changes keep the skin drier and reduce enzyme exposure. Breastfed babies may have more frequent stools, so check the diaper at every feeding.
Tips
- Check the diaper at least every 2 hours during the day and promptly after bowel movements
- Nighttime changes are important during active rash; once the rash clears, a well-fitting overnight diaper is usually sufficient
- Pat the skin dry gently rather than rubbing -- friction worsens irritation
- Allow the skin to air-dry for a minute before fastening the fresh diaper
