Use a baby bathtub with warm water and proper support
4
Once the umbilical cord stump has fallen off and healed, transition to tub baths using an infant bathtub. Fill it with 2-3 inches of warm water (around 100 F / 38 C). Test the water temperature with your wrist or elbow before placing the baby in. Support the baby's head and neck with one hand at all times.
Steps
- Fill the baby tub with 2-3 inches of warm water and test the temperature
- Undress the baby and lower them gently into the tub, feet first, supporting the head and neck
- Wash the face with a damp cloth and plain water
- Use a small amount of mild baby soap on the scalp, body, and limbs
- Rinse thoroughly by cupping water in your hand or using a damp cloth
- Lift the baby out and immediately wrap in a hooded towel
Tips
- The AAP recommends bathing infants no more than 3 times per week to avoid drying out their skin
- Never leave a baby unattended in water, even for a moment
- Keep the room warm (around 75 F / 24 C) to prevent chilling
- Have a towel, clean diaper, and clothes ready before you start
