Use a baby bathtub with warm water and proper support

4

Once the umbilical cord stump has fallen off and healed, transition to tub baths using an infant bathtub. Fill it with 2-3 inches of warm water (around 100 F / 38 C). Test the water temperature with your wrist or elbow before placing the baby in. Support the baby's head and neck with one hand at all times.

Steps

  1. Fill the baby tub with 2-3 inches of warm water and test the temperature
  2. Undress the baby and lower them gently into the tub, feet first, supporting the head and neck
  3. Wash the face with a damp cloth and plain water
  4. Use a small amount of mild baby soap on the scalp, body, and limbs
  5. Rinse thoroughly by cupping water in your hand or using a damp cloth
  6. Lift the baby out and immediately wrap in a hooded towel

Tips

  • The AAP recommends bathing infants no more than 3 times per week to avoid drying out their skin
  • Never leave a baby unattended in water, even for a moment
  • Keep the room warm (around 75 F / 24 C) to prevent chilling
  • Have a towel, clean diaper, and clothes ready before you start
