Track month-by-month physical milestones

5

Monitor your baby's gross and fine motor development at predictable intervals throughout the first year. Knowing what to expect helps you provide the right support and spot delays early.

Key Physical Milestones

  • 2 months: Lifts head briefly during tummy time, makes smoother arm and leg movements
  • 4 months: Holds head steady unsupported, pushes up on elbows during tummy time, brings hands to mouth
  • 6 months: Rolls both ways, begins sitting with support, reaches for and grasps toys
  • 9 months: Sits without support, pulls to stand, transfers objects hand to hand, uses pincer grasp emerging
  • 12 months: Pulls to stand and cruises along furniture, may take first independent steps, picks up small objects with thumb and forefinger

Tips

  • Milestones have wide normal ranges; some babies walk at 9 months, others at 15 months
  • The AAP recommends developmental screening at 9, 18, and 30 months during well-child visits
  • Focus on the overall pattern of progress rather than hitting exact dates
