Use rhythmic motion -- rocking, bouncing, or a gentle car ride
5
Hold your baby securely and use gentle, rhythmic motion to calm them. Rock in a chair, sway side to side, bounce lightly on an exercise ball, or go for a car ride or stroller walk. Consistent, repetitive movement is one of the most reliable ways to settle a fussy baby.
Why It Works
Babies experienced constant motion in the womb for nine months. Rhythmic movement activates the vestibular system and triggers a calming response. The AAP includes gentle motion among recommended soothing strategies for newborns and young infants.
Tips
- Support the head and neck at all times, especially for newborns under 4 months
- Never shake a baby -- use gentle, controlled movements only. Shaking can cause severe brain injury
- A baby swing or vibrating bouncer can provide hands-free motion when you need a break
- Car rides work well because the combination of engine vibration, white noise, and motion is deeply soothing
- Walking with the baby in a front carrier or sling combines motion with body contact
- If rocking works, try gradually reducing the intensity as the baby calms rather than stopping abruptly
