Use Common Objects of Known Size (Money, Cards, Paper)

4

Manufactured items have standardized dimensions, making them surprisingly reliable stand-in rulers. Keep a few key sizes memorized and you can estimate most everyday measurements.

Common Reference Objects

  • Credit/debit card -- 3.37 x 2.13 inches (85.6 x 53.98 mm), standardized worldwide
  • US dollar bill -- 6.14 x 2.61 inches (156 x 66 mm)
  • US Letter paper -- 8.5 x 11 inches (216 x 279 mm)
  • A4 paper -- 8.27 x 11.69 inches (210 x 297 mm)
  • US quarter coin -- 0.96 inches (24.3 mm) diameter

Steps

  1. Place the object along the length you need to measure, marking each endpoint.
  2. Count repetitions and multiply by the object's known dimension.

Tips

  • A credit card is the most universally available reference since its size is an international standard (ISO/IEC 7810).
  • Combine objects for lengths that don't divide evenly.
