Use VCI products and humidity control for long-term storage
4
Wrap tools in VCI (Vapor Corrosion Inhibitor) paper or store them with VCI drawer liners that release corrosion-inhibiting molecules into the surrounding air. Combine with silica gel desiccants and a dehumidifier set below 50% humidity.
Why It Works
VCI compounds create an invisible molecular barrier on metal surfaces that blocks moisture and oxygen contact. Unlike oil, VCI protection works passively — no wiping or reapplying needed — and protects items even in the enclosed airspace around them.
Tips
- Zerust VCI drawer liners protect an entire toolbox passively for 2-5 years
- VCI bags are ideal for storing seasonal tools, spare parts, and firearms
- A dehumidifier in the workshop below 50% humidity prevents rust on all tools and equipment
- Boeshield T-9 (developed by Boeing) leaves a waxy, long-lasting protective film on exposed surfaces
- Don't store tools in cardboard boxes long-term — cardboard absorbs and holds moisture against metal
- Fingerprints contain salt and moisture — wipe tools before storage
