Tighten Fasteners, Use Shims/Pads, or Re-glue Joints

4

Description

Wobbles are usually caused by loose joints or uneven leg lengths. Addressing the specific cause provides stability.

Recipe/Instructions

  1. Check Fasteners: Turn the chair or table upside down. Inspect all joints where legs attach to the seat/frame or where stretchers connect legs. Use a screwdriver or wrench to firmly tighten any screws or bolts.
  2. Identify Short Leg: Place the furniture on a known level surface. Identify which leg is slightly shorter or not making full contact, causing the wobble.
  3. Add Shim/Pad: For minor wobbles on hard floors, stick a self-adhesive felt pad or rubber furniture pad onto the bottom of the short leg to even it out.
  4. Use Shim: For larger gaps, insert a thin shim (wood or plastic) under the short leg. You can trim it flush and optionally glue it in place.
  5. Makeshift Shim: In a pinch, folded cardboard or a coaster can temporarily stop a wobble.
  6. Re-glue Loose Joints (Wood Furniture): If tightening screws doesn't help and joints are loose (especially on wooden chairs):
    • Carefully disassemble the loose joint if possible.
    • Clean out old glue from the dowel holes and leg tenons.
    • Apply fresh wood glue liberally to the joint surfaces.
    • Reassemble the joint firmly.
    • Use clamps or straps to hold the joint tightly together while the glue dries completely (follow glue instructions, usually 24 hours).
    • Wipe away excess glue immediately with a damp cloth.
