Use a commercial rust remover product
4
Apply a purpose-made rust remover to dissolve or convert rust using professional-grade chemistry. Commercial products work significantly faster than household methods and handle heavy corrosion that vinegar or baking soda cannot.
Why It Works
Commercial rust removers use stronger acids (phosphoric, oxalic) or chelating agents to break down iron oxide rapidly. They come as gels for targeted application, sprays for light rust and hard-to-reach spots, and bath formulas for full immersion of heavily rusted items.
Steps
- Work in a well-ventilated area wearing rubber gloves and safety glasses
- Apply per product label -- brush on gel, spray liberally, or submerge in bath solution
- Let dwell for the recommended time (typically 5-30 minutes)
- Scrub any remaining residue with a stiff brush
- Rinse thoroughly and dry completely
- Apply protective oil or coating
Tips
- Chelating soaks (e.g., Evapo-Rust) are non-toxic and reusable, safe on most metals
- Rust converters (e.g., Ospho) transform rust into a paintable primer coat rather than removing it
- Never use acid-based products on aluminum, chrome, or stainless steel
- Do not exceed recommended dwell times -- overapplication can etch and pit the base metal
