Roll clothes, use packing cubes, and fill every gap
5
Combine rolling, compression cubes, and gap-filling to squeeze the most out of any suitcase. These three techniques work together to eliminate dead space and keep everything organized.
Steps
- Roll each garment tightly: T-shirts, pants, and dresses take up less volume rolled than folded, and they wrinkle less too.
- Group rolled items into packing cubes: Compress each cube after zipping to push out excess air. Keep categories separate (tops, bottoms, underwear).
- Stuff shoes and fill gaps: Pack socks, underwear, belts, or chargers inside shoes. Tuck small items into corners between cubes.
- Wear your bulkiest items: Put on heavy shoes, a thick sweater, or your jacket while traveling instead of packing them.
- Place heavy items near the wheels: Shoes and toiletry bags at the bottom keep the suitcase balanced and easier to roll.
Tips
- Use travel-sized containers for liquids and keep them in a sealed zip-top bag to prevent leaks
- Start with the heaviest layer first, then fill upward with cubes and soft items
