Vinegar spray.
3
A diluted white vinegar solution can neutralize carpet odors by breaking down alkaline odor molecules on contact. Mix equal parts water and white vinegar in a spray bottle, mist lightly over the carpet, and allow it to air dry with good ventilation.
How It Works
Vinegar's acetic acid reacts with alkaline compounds found in many common odor sources, converting them into odorless salts. The vinegar smell dissipates as the carpet dries, taking trapped odors with it.
Caution
Always test on an inconspicuous area first. Vinegar's acidity can affect dye stability or damage certain fibers such as silk or wool. Avoid over-saturating the carpet, as excess moisture can promote mold growth underneath.
