Lubricate hinges with silicone spray or white lithium grease.

Applying a proper long-term lubricant to door hinges is the most effective first step for fixing squeaks. Spray the lubricant directly onto the hinge pin and into the knuckle joints, then work the door back and forth to distribute it evenly.

Why Not WD-40?

WD-40 is a penetrant and solvent, not a lubricant. It will stop a squeak temporarily by displacing moisture and loosening debris, but it evaporates within days and the squeak returns. It also strips away any existing lubrication.

Recommended Lubricants

  • Silicone spray — long-lasting, clean, does not attract dust
  • White lithium grease — heavier duty, excellent for metal-on-metal friction, stays in place longer
  • 3-in-1 oil — a reasonable alternative household oil

Steps

  1. Open the door to access all hinges
  2. Spray lubricant onto each hinge pin and knuckle
  3. Swing the door back and forth several times
  4. Wipe off any excess with a cloth
