Apply mayonnaise or petroleum jelly overnight

Spread a thin layer of mayonnaise or petroleum jelly over the water ring and leave it for several hours or overnight. Wipe clean with a soft cloth in the morning and buff gently. The oils penetrate the finish and displace the trapped moisture that causes the white mark.

Why It Works

Mayonnaise contains oil and vinegar that slowly work into the finish, displacing water molecules trapped beneath the surface. Petroleum jelly works similarly by creating an oil barrier that encourages moisture to migrate out over time.

Tips

• Full-fat mayonnaise works best -- low-fat versions have less oil and are less effective
• For stubborn rings, mix a small amount of cigarette or fireplace ash into the mayonnaise for mild abrasive action
• Test on an inconspicuous area first, especially on antique or specialty finishes
• Wipe off all residue thoroughly to avoid attracting dust
