Read garment care labels before sorting

Check the care label sewn inside each garment before deciding which pile it belongs in. Labels specify recommended wash temperature, cycle type, and whether the item needs hand washing or dry cleaning only.

Why It Works

Manufacturers test their fabrics and dyes to determine the safest cleaning method. Following label instructions prevents shrinkage, color loss, and fiber damage. A garment that looks machine-washable may actually require hand washing or a specific temperature.

Tips

• Labels reading "wash separately" or "may bleed" mean the item should go in its own small load
• "Dry clean only" means the fabric will likely be damaged by water washing
• When labels are missing or faded, default to cold water on a gentle cycle
