Dry clothes completely before storing
5
Make sure every item is fully dry before folding and storing. Clothes that go into drawers or closets even slightly damp will develop mildew and musty odors within hours.
Why It Works
Mildew is a fungal growth that thrives in dark, damp environments — exactly the conditions inside a closed drawer or closet with damp fabric. Once mildew colonizes fabric, it produces musty-smelling volatile compounds and can cause permanent staining. Complete drying eliminates the moisture mildew needs to grow.
Tips
- Check thick seams, waistbands, and collar areas — these are the last spots to dry
- If air drying, ensure good airflow around all garments
- Never fold towels that are even slightly damp
- If clothes smell musty despite being dry, the washing machine itself may harbor mildew — run an empty hot cycle with vinegar or a machine cleaner
