Use OxiClean or a commercial oxygen bleach product

4

Dissolve OxiClean (or a similar oxygen bleach product like OxoBrite or Seventh Generation Oxygen Whitener) in hot water following the package directions. Soak yellowed cotton or linen for several hours or overnight, then wash as usual.

Why It Works

These products contain sodium percarbonate as the active ingredient, which releases hydrogen peroxide in water to oxidize yellowing compounds. The commercial formulations often include surfactants that help the solution penetrate fabric fibers more evenly.

Tips

  • Hot water (50-60°C) activates the product most effectively
  • Safe for both cotton and linen
  • For stubborn yellowing, a second overnight soak may be needed
  • Pure sodium percarbonate is the same active ingredient at a lower price per use
