Add borax to the wash cycle

4

Add 1/2 cup of borax (sodium tetraborate) to the washing machine along with your regular detergent when washing yellowed whites. For a pre-soak, dissolve 1/2 cup in a basin of warm water and soak for 30 minutes before washing.

Why It Works

Borax converts some water molecules into hydrogen peroxide, providing a gentle bleaching action. Its alkaline pH (~9.5) neutralizes acidic stains and dissolves organic soils. It also binds with calcium and magnesium ions in hard water, softening the water so detergent works more effectively on embedded dirt and oils.

Tips

  • Safe for both cotton and linen (do not use on wool or silk)
  • Especially helpful if you have hard water, which contributes to fabric dinginess
  • Wear gloves when handling borax, as it can irritate skin
  • Combines well with regular detergent for a whitening boost each wash
