Prevent yellowing with proper washing and storage
5
Wash white cotton and linen thoroughly before storing to remove all body oils, detergent residue, and soil — these oxidize over time and cause yellowing. Store clean whites in a cool, dark, dry place wrapped in acid-free tissue paper, not in plastic bags or cardboard boxes.
Why It Works
Yellowing in stored natural fibers is caused by oxidation of residual organic compounds (body oils, perspiration, starch) left in the fabric. Plastic bags trap moisture and promote mildew; cardboard and regular tissue paper are acidic and transfer their acidity to the fabric. Acid-free tissue and good air circulation prevent both problems.
Tips
- Never store whites in direct contact with wood (acidic tannins) or colored fabrics (dye transfer)
- Avoid starch before storage — it attracts insects and yellows over time
- Refold stored linens periodically to prevent permanent crease lines
- Keeping whites in use and washing regularly is actually better than long-term storage
