Prevent angel wing by feeding a balanced diet to ducklings
Feed growing ducklings a balanced starter/grower feed with 18–20% protein and avoid high-calorie, high-carbohydrate supplements like bread, crackers, or excessive corn. Angel wing is a permanent wing deformity where the last joint twists outward, causing the flight feathers to stick out at an angle instead of lying flat against the body. It is caused by excessively rapid growth from diets too high in protein or calories during the critical 3–8 week growth period.
Why It Works
Angel wing develops when the wing feathers grow faster than the supporting bone and muscle structures can develop, causing the weight of the blood-filled feather shafts to twist the wrist joint outward. Balanced commercial feed provides steady, controlled growth. High-carb foods like bread cause energy spikes that accelerate feather growth beyond what the skeleton can support. Once the joint hardens (around 8–10 weeks), the deformity is permanent.
Tips
- Never feed bread, chips, or crackers to ducklings — these are the primary dietary cause of angel wing
- If caught before 4 weeks old, the wing can sometimes be corrected by gently taping it against the body for 3–5 days
- Switch from starter feed (20% protein) to grower feed (16–18% protein) at 3 weeks to moderate growth rate
- Angel wing does not cause pain and affected ducks live normal lives — they simply cannot fly (which is irrelevant for most domestic breeds)
- Wild ducks in parks fed bread by humans frequently develop angel wing
