Use separate feeders and waterers for each species

4

Provide distinct feeding and watering stations for ducks and chickens. Ducks need waterers deep enough for full head submersion (4–6 inches), which chickens can drown in if they fall asleep at the rim. Chickens need elevated feeders to reduce waste, while ducks eat best from ground-level dishes. Ducks also require higher niacin levels than chickens, making species-specific feed management important.

Why It Works

Ducks wash every bite of food by dunking it in water, turning any shared waterer into a soupy mess within minutes. Chickens refuse to drink dirty water and will dehydrate rather than use a duck-fouled waterer. Separate stations ensure each species has clean water and appropriate feed. If both species eat the same layer feed, supplement the duck feed station with brewer's yeast (1 tablespoon per cup) for niacin.

Tips

  • Place duck waterers in the "wet zone" of the run and chicken waterers in the dry zone
  • Use nipple waterers for chickens to keep their water clean regardless of duck activity nearby
  • Elevated chicken feeders (hung at back height) prevent ducks from accessing them if feed separation is needed
  • Monitor that both species are eating and drinking adequately — bullying at feeding stations is common in early integration
