Consider a livestock guardian animal for free-range flocks

3

For free-range or large-pasture duck flocks, consider a livestock guardian dog (LGD) or guardian geese to provide active predator deterrence. LGD breeds like Great Pyrenees, Anatolian Shepherds, and Maremmas have been bred for centuries to bond with and protect livestock. Guardian geese are large, alert, and aggressive toward intruders, providing an alarm system and modest physical deterrence against smaller predators.

Why It Works

LGDs patrol their territory, mark boundaries with scent, and confront or chase away predators — their presence alone deters most coyotes, foxes, and stray dogs. A well-trained LGD can protect a free-range flock across several acres where physical fencing is impractical. Geese have excellent eyesight, are highly alert, and produce loud alarm calls that warn the flock and alert the owner. Their aggressive displays can deter hawks, raccoons, and smaller predators.

Tips

  • LGDs require significant commitment: 1–2 years of training, proper socialization with poultry, secure fencing during training, and $500–$1500 purchase cost
  • Not practical for small suburban flocks — LGDs need space and can be noisy
  • Guardian geese are lower-commitment but less effective against large predators (coyotes, dogs)
  • African and Chinese geese are the most commonly used guardian breeds due to their loud voices and alert temperament
  • An untrained dog near ducks is a predator, not a guardian — never assume a pet dog will protect poultry
