Choose naturally quieter duck breeds
Select breeds known for low noise levels if you keep ducks in a suburban or semi-urban setting. Muscovy ducks are by far the quietest domestic duck — they hiss, wag their tails, and bob their heads instead of quacking, producing virtually no noise audible beyond your property. Welsh Harlequins and Buff Orpingtons are among the quieter standard quacking breeds. Pekins and Call ducks are the loudest.
Why It Works
Breed genetics determine vocal behavior. Muscovies are a separate species (Cairina moschata) from standard domestic ducks (Anas platyrhynchos domesticus) and physically lack the vocal structure for a loud quack. Among standard breeds, noise levels vary significantly — a Pekin female's quack reaches 60–70 decibels and carries well beyond property lines, while a Welsh Harlequin is noticeably softer and less frequent in her vocalizations.
Tips
- Quietest to loudest: Muscovy (nearly silent), Welsh Harlequin, Buff Orpington, Cayuga, Khaki Campbell, Pekin, Call duck
- Call ducks were literally bred as decoy ducks to attract wild ducks with their loud, carrying quack — avoid them if noise is a concern
- Males (drakes) of all standard breeds are significantly quieter than females, producing only a soft raspy sound
- Even quiet breeds vocalize when startled, excited about food, or separated from flockmates
