Apply broad-spectrum SPF 30+ sunscreen daily
5
Apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher every morning, even on overcast days. Reapply every two hours during prolonged outdoor exposure, and immediately after swimming or heavy sweating.
Why It Works
UV radiation is the leading external cause of premature skin aging (photoaging), responsible for wrinkles, hyperpigmentation, and loss of elasticity. UVA rays penetrate deep into the dermis and break down collagen and elastin year-round, while UVB rays cause sunburn primarily in summer. Broad-spectrum sunscreen blocks both. Dermatologists consider daily sunscreen the single most effective anti-aging measure available.
Tips
- Use about a nickel-sized amount for the face and a shot glass worth for the full body
- Mineral sunscreens (zinc oxide, titanium dioxide) sit on the skin surface and are well-tolerated by sensitive skin
- Chemical sunscreens (avobenzone, octisalate) absorb UV and feel lighter but may irritate reactive skin
- Complement sunscreen with protective clothing, wide-brimmed hats, and shade during peak UV hours (10 AM - 4 PM)
- No sunscreen blocks 100% of UV -- SPF 30 filters about 97% of UVB rays
