Offer safe teething toys for increased chewing
4
Babies who are teething instinctively chew and gnaw on anything they can get into their mouths -- fingers, fists, toys, crib rails, and clothing. This counter-pressure on the gums provides natural pain relief. Increased mouthing and biting behavior is one of the most recognizable teething signs.
What to Provide
- Solid silicone or rubber teething rings that the baby can grip and chew safely
- Chilled teething toys -- refrigerate (do not freeze) for added soothing effect
- A clean, cold, wet washcloth for the baby to gnaw on
What to Avoid
- Liquid-filled teething rings -- they can break and leak
- Frozen teething toys -- extreme cold can bruise or damage tender gums
- Amber teething necklaces -- the AAP and FDA warn these pose strangulation and choking hazards with no proven benefit
- Homeopathic teething tablets -- the FDA has warned against these due to inconsistent levels of belladonna found in some products
Tips
- Choose BPA-free, phthalate-free teething toys made from food-grade silicone
- Wash teething toys regularly with warm soapy water
- Supervise the baby whenever a teething toy is in use to prevent choking
