Replace the Flapper

5

Swap the worn rubber flapper at the bottom of the tank for a new one to restore the watertight seal between the tank and bowl.

Steps

  1. Turn off the water supply valve behind the toilet and flush to empty the tank
  2. Unhook the old flapper from the overflow tube pegs and disconnect the chain
  3. Take the old flapper to a hardware store to match the size and style
  4. Snap the new flapper onto the pegs and reconnect the chain to the flush lever
  5. Turn the water back on, let the tank fill, and check that the toilet stops running

Tips

  • Korky and Fluidmaster universal flappers ($3-8) fit most standard toilets
  • A flapper that feels stiff, warped, or has mineral buildup should be replaced rather than cleaned
  • If the new flapper still leaks, the flush valve seat may be rough or corroded and may need sanding with emery cloth
