Replace the Flapper
5
Swap the worn rubber flapper at the bottom of the tank for a new one to restore the watertight seal between the tank and bowl.
Steps
- Turn off the water supply valve behind the toilet and flush to empty the tank
- Unhook the old flapper from the overflow tube pegs and disconnect the chain
- Take the old flapper to a hardware store to match the size and style
- Snap the new flapper onto the pegs and reconnect the chain to the flush lever
- Turn the water back on, let the tank fill, and check that the toilet stops running
Tips
- Korky and Fluidmaster universal flappers ($3-8) fit most standard toilets
- A flapper that feels stiff, warped, or has mineral buildup should be replaced rather than cleaned
- If the new flapper still leaks, the flush valve seat may be rough or corroded and may need sanding with emery cloth
