Apply Weather Stripping
5
Weather stripping seals the gaps between movable components of windows and doors and their frames, blocking air infiltration at contact points. It is one of the most effective and affordable draft-reduction methods, typically costing under $20 per door or window and taking 15-30 minutes to install. Different materials offer different lifespans: metal V-strip (also called tension strip) lasts 20+ years, vinyl or rubber compression strips last 5-10 years, and adhesive foam tape lasts only 1-3 years before it compresses and loses effectiveness.
How to Apply
- Open the window or door and clean the surfaces where the stripping will adhere using rubbing alcohol or an all-purpose cleaner. Surfaces must be dry before application.
- Measure each edge carefully and cut the weather stripping to length with scissors or a utility knife.
- Peel the adhesive backing and press firmly into place along the door or window stop, ensuring the material compresses slightly when the door or window closes.
- Close the door or window to test the seal. You should feel resistance but still be able to latch without force.
- For sliding windows, apply stripping to the bottom rail and meeting rail where the two sashes overlap.
Tips
- Replace foam tape weather stripping every 1-2 years as it compresses permanently and stops sealing
- V-strip (bronze or stainless steel) is the longest-lasting option and works well on double-hung windows
- Do not apply in temperatures below 40F as adhesive will not bond properly
- Test for remaining drafts by holding a lit incense stick near the edges after installation
