Grout Pen or Grout Paint
3
Apply a grout pen or grout paint directly over stained grout lines to restore a uniform, clean appearance. This is a cosmetic fix that covers discoloration rather than removing it -- best for grout that is structurally sound but permanently stained.
Why It Works
Grout pens and paints deposit an opaque, water-resistant coating over the existing grout surface. They mask stains that cleaning cannot remove, such as deeply absorbed dye, rust, or years of embedded grime. Many formulas also contain fungicides that inhibit future mold growth.
Tips
- Clean the grout thoroughly and let it dry completely before applying -- paint will not adhere to dirty or damp grout
- Choose a color that matches your existing grout; white and light grey are the most common options
- Apply with steady, even strokes and wipe excess off the tile immediately with a damp cloth
- Expect to reapply every 6-12 months in high-traffic or high-moisture areas
- Grout paint covers larger areas more efficiently; grout pens are better for touch-ups and narrow lines
