Focus on Strengths and Build Confidence
5
Alongside addressing challenges, deliberately identify and nurture the child's strengths and interests. Providing regular opportunities to excel in areas of passion counteracts the frustration that often accompanies learning difficulties and fosters a positive relationship with learning.
Why It Works
Children with learning challenges frequently internalize a sense of failure. Strength-based instruction shows them that difficulty in one area does not define their overall ability. Confidence built through success in preferred subjects often spills over into more challenging ones.
Tips
- Celebrate effort and incremental progress, not just outcomes
- Dedicate a portion of each day to a subject or activity the child genuinely enjoys
- Use strengths as a bridge; for example, a child who loves drawing can illustrate story summaries to reinforce reading comprehension
