Get corticosteroid injections into bald patches

5

What to Do

Visit a dermatologist for intralesional corticosteroid injections (typically triamcinolone acetonide) directly into the bald patches. Sessions are usually every 4-6 weeks. Multiple small injections are spaced across each patch.

Why It Works

Corticosteroid injections suppress the localized immune attack on hair follicles. They are considered the first-line treatment for limited alopecia areata (a few small patches). Regrowth typically begins within 4-8 weeks of the first session.

Tips

  • Most effective for patches smaller than a palm
  • Temporary skin thinning or small dents at injection sites can occur but usually resolve
  • If no response after 6 months of injections, discuss alternative treatments with your dermatologist
