Recognize allergy symptoms in children — the allergic salute and other signs

5

What to Do

Learn to spot allergy signs that children often cannot describe: the allergic salute (upward nose rubbing with the palm), allergic shiners (dark circles under eyes), mouth breathing, snoring, frequent throat clearing, and nose wrinkling.

Why It Works

Children rarely say "my nose is congested." Instead, allergies manifest as behavioral changes — irritability, poor concentration, fatigue, and reluctance to play outside. Teachers may report attention problems that are actually caused by poorly controlled allergies impairing sleep and cognitive function.

Tips

  • A horizontal crease across the nose bridge (from repeated rubbing) is a telltale sign
  • Dennie-Morgan lines (extra creases under the lower eyelids) suggest chronic allergic inflammation
  • Children may describe itchy eyes/nose as "my face is bothering me"
  • If school performance drops seasonally, allergies may be the hidden cause
