Worm castings as a premium compost component
Worm castings (vermicompost) are the richest, most biologically active form of compost available. They contain 5x more nitrogen, 7x more phosphorus, and 11x more potassium than average garden soil, plus a dense population of beneficial microorganisms. Use worm castings as 15-25% of your total soil mix for premium results, or as a top-dressing (1-2 inch layer) on existing beds. Worm castings improve soil structure, water retention, and nutrient availability while suppressing certain plant diseases. Commercial castings cost $15-30 per cubic foot (brands like Wiggle Worm, Brut Worm Farms, or local vermicomposters). For ongoing supply, start a home worm bin for $30-60 that converts kitchen scraps into castings year-round. A standard worm bin produces enough castings to top-dress 2-3 raised beds annually. Castings will not burn plants regardless of quantity, unlike raw manure or synthetic fertilizers. Apply as a seed-starting medium, side-dressing around established plants, or mixed into transplant holes.
