ADA-accessible raised bed design (wheelchair height)

5

ADA-accessible raised beds for wheelchair users require specific dimensions. Bed height should be 24-30 inches (top of soil surface), placing the growing area at comfortable arm-working height from a seated position. Maximum height is 34 inches per ADA guidelines. Width must be limited to 24 inches for one-sided access or up to 36 inches if accessible from both sides. For forward-approach wheelchair access, beds can be built with knee clearance space underneath: minimum 27 inches of clear space below the bed surface, with an open front allowing the wheelchair to roll partially under the bed. This knee-space design limits soil depth to roughly 7-10 inches (the space between the 27-inch knee clearance and 34-inch maximum top height). Pathways between beds must be at least 48 inches wide (60 inches preferred) with firm, stable, slip-resistant surfaces (compacted gravel, concrete, or pavers). U-shaped or L-shaped bed configurations allow wheelchair users to reach more planting area from a single position. Consider octagonal beds for easier wheelchair navigation around corners.
