Iron phosphate slug and snail bait (Sluggo)

Iron phosphate bait pellets (brand names: Sluggo, Slug Magic, Natria) are the safest and most effective chemical-free slug and snail control for food gardens. When slugs ingest the pellets, iron phosphate disrupts calcium metabolism in their gut, causing them to stop feeding immediately and die within 3-6 days. Iron phosphate is certified organic (OMRI listed), safe around children, pets, birds, and beneficial insects, and can be used in berry gardens up to harvest day. Apply at a rate of approximately 1 teaspoon per square yard (or 1/2-1 pound per 1,000 square feet), scattering pellets evenly around vulnerable plants. Pellets remain active for up to 2 weeks, even after repeated wetting by rain or irrigation. Reapply every 2 weeks during peak slug season (spring and fall, especially in wet climates). A 2.5-lb container ($10-15) treats up to 2,500 square feet. Iron phosphate breaks down into iron and phosphate, both nutrients that benefit soil. This is the best single product for slug control when physical barriers alone are insufficient.
