Standard 4x8-foot bed (the gold standard)

5

The 4x8-foot raised bed is the most widely recommended size for home gardeners and is considered the optimal balance between growing space, reachability, and material efficiency. The 4-foot width allows an adult to comfortably reach the center from either side without stepping on the soil (critical for preventing compaction). The 8-foot length matches standard lumber dimensions, minimizing cuts and waste. At 12 inches deep, this bed holds approximately 32 cubic feet (just over 1 cubic yard) of soil. It provides 32 square feet of growing area, enough for a meaningful vegetable garden: 4-8 tomato plants, or a diverse mix of greens, herbs, and vegetables. Standard lumber (2x10 or 2x12 boards in 8-foot lengths) requires only corner cuts for assembly. Two beds of this size with a 3-foot path between them fit in most suburban backyards and produce enough vegetables for a family of four when intensively planted. This is the best starting size for first-time raised bed gardeners.
