How to extend the growing season in raised beds?

Raised beds naturally warm up faster in spring than in-ground soil, but additional season extension techniques can add 6-8 weeks or more to both ends of the growing season. In cold climates, this can mean the difference between a 4-month and a 7-month harvest window. Key methods include cold frames, hoop houses (low tunnels), floating row covers, Wall-O-Water plant protectors, and strategic mulching. These work by trapping solar heat, blocking wind, and insulating plants from frost. Many cold-hardy crops actually improve in flavor after light frost exposure. The most effective approach often combines multiple techniques, such as a hoop house over a raised bed with row covers inside for double insulation. Season extension also works in reverse, protecting fall crops from early frosts to extend the harvest into winter.
