Check thatch layer and plan dethatching if over half an inch
4
Dig up a small wedge of turf with a trowel and measure the brown, spongy layer between the green grass and the soil surface. If thatch exceeds half an inch, plan to dethatch during your grass type's peak growth period.
Why It Works
A thin thatch layer (under half an inch) insulates roots and retains moisture. But thick thatch blocks water, oxygen, and fertilizer from reaching the soil, and harbors pests and disease.
Tips
- Kentucky bluegrass, bermudagrass, and zoysiagrass are the most thatch-prone grasses.
- Tall fescue and perennial ryegrass rarely develop thatch problems.
- If thatch exceeds 2 inches, consider hiring a professional for staged removal.
