Mow every 5 to 7 days during peak spring growth
4
During the spring growth surge (typically April through May for cool-season grasses), plan to mow every 5 to 7 days. In especially wet, warm springs you may need to mow twice per week to stay within the one-third rule.
Why It Works
Cool-season grasses grow fastest in spring when soil temperatures are between 50-65°F. Letting them get too tall between mows forces you to cut off too much at once, stressing the plant and leaving clumps.
Tips
- Growth slows in summer heat — you may drop to mowing every 10-14 days by July.
- Warm-season grasses peak later (June-August) and may need mowing every 3-5 days at their fastest.
