Alternate mowing direction each session

Change your mowing pattern every time you mow. If you went north-south last time, go east-west next. Occasionally mow diagonally for variety.

Why It Works

Grass blades lean in the direction they are repeatedly mowed. Alternating patterns keeps the grass growing upright, produces a more even cut, and prevents ruts from forming in the soil where mower wheels track.
