What to Do

Spread a quarter-inch layer of screened compost over the lawn, ideally after core aeration. One cubic yard covers approximately 1,000 sq ft at this depth.

Why It Works

Compost delivers a broad spectrum of nutrients at a pace the grass can absorb, feeds beneficial soil microbes, and builds organic matter over time. Unlike granular fertilizers, compost also improves soil structure — loosening clay and adding water retention to sand.

Tips

• Use finely screened compost so it settles between grass blades rather than sitting on top.
• Topdressing annually after fall aeration is the most effective timing, but spring applications after aeration also work well.
• Expect to topdress for 4-5 years to meaningfully raise soil organic matter levels.
