Use prodiamine (Barricade) for long-lasting pre-emergent control
5
What to Do
Apply prodiamine (sold as Barricade) at the label rate in mid-spring. It provides the longest residual control of any pre-emergent herbicide — up to 6 months at full rate.
Why It Works
Prodiamine binds tightly to soil particles and resists leaching, creating a durable barrier against crabgrass, goosegrass, and Poa annua. Its long residual means a single application can last the entire season in many climates.
Tips
- Available as granular (easier for homeowners) or liquid concentrate (more precise).
- Can be split into two half-rate applications 8-10 weeks apart for even longer coverage.
- Do not aerate or dethatch after applying — this breaks the chemical barrier.
