Adjust watering frequency for sandy versus clay soils

4

What to Do

Sandy soils need more frequent but lighter waterings because they drain quickly. Clay soils need less frequent but slower applications because they absorb water slowly and hold it longer.

Why It Works

Purdue Extension explains that sandy soils may only hold a quarter to three-quarters inch of water in the root zone, while clay soils can hold 1 to 1.25 inches. The grass uses the same total amount per week regardless of soil type — but the delivery schedule must match the soil's capacity.

Tips

  • Sandy soil: Water 2-3 times per week with half an inch each time.
  • Clay soil: Water once per week with 1 inch, applied slowly to avoid runoff.
  • Loam: The ideal middle ground — once or twice per week works well.
  • If water runs off before you have applied enough, use a cycle-and-soak approach: water for 15 minutes, pause for 30, then water again.
