Avoid overwatering in rainy springs to prevent shallow roots

4

What to Do

If spring brings regular rainfall, turn off your irrigation system entirely. Do not add supplemental water when nature is providing an inch or more per week. Resume irrigation only when a dry stretch causes visible wilt.

Why It Works

Overwatering in spring is as damaging as underwatering. Constantly saturated soil prevents oxygen from reaching roots, promotes shallow root growth, encourages fungal diseases, and creates perfect germination conditions for crabgrass and other weeds. A slightly drier spring lawn develops deeper, stronger roots.

Tips

  • If you have an in-ground system, install a rain sensor ($15-30) that automatically shuts off irrigation after rainfall.
  • Soggy, squishy areas that do not dry out may indicate drainage problems rather than just wet weather.
  • Overwatered lawns often develop more moss, algae, and mushrooms than dry lawns.
