Send a soil sample to your county extension lab
5
Steps
- Collect 5-6 soil samples from different areas of the lawn using a trowel or soil probe.
- Sample to a depth of 3-4 inches for established lawns (6 inches for new lawn areas).
- Mix all samples together in a clean bucket.
- Fill the lab's sample bag or container with the mixed soil.
- Submit to your county cooperative extension office or state university soil lab.
Why It Works
A professional soil test ($15-30) measures pH, phosphorus, potassium, magnesium, calcium, and organic matter. The report includes specific lime and fertilizer recommendations for your soil. Virginia Tech says it plainly: don't guess — soil test. It is the single best investment in lawn care.
Tips
- Fall sampling is preferred for planning, but spring works too.
- Avoid sampling right after fertilizing or liming — wait at least 6-8 weeks.
