Identify the ant species before treating
What to Do
Before buying any product, identify which ant species you have. Observe their size, color, trail behavior, and where they concentrate. Sugar ants (2-3mm, attracted to sweets) respond to liquid borax baits. Carpenter ants (6-13mm, found near wood) need protein baits and possibly professional treatment. Fire ants (reddish, outdoor mounds) require broadcast baiting. Pavement ants (dark, under concrete) respond to both sugar and protein baits.
Why It Works
Different ant species have different food preferences, nesting habits, and vulnerabilities. Using a sugar bait on carpenter ants (which prefer protein) wastes time and money. Identifying the species first lets you choose the right approach — the most common mistake in ant control is treating without identification.
Tips
- University extension websites have free ant identification guides with photos
- If unsure, try both sugar and protein baits simultaneously
- Local extension offices will sometimes identify pest samples for free
