Try bay leaves as a supplemental deterrent
2
What to Do
Place whole dried bay leaves inside flour containers, rice bins, and grain storage. Replace every 2-3 months as the scent fades. Some people also tape bay leaves to pantry shelves.
Why It Works
Bay leaves contain eucalyptol, a compound that some studies show repels certain pantry insects at close range. However, evidence is weak and inconsistent — bay leaves may mildly deter adult moths from landing but will not kill eggs, larvae, or established infestations.
Tips
- Use bay leaves only as a supplement to airtight containers and proper cleaning — never as a primary defense
- Fresh bay leaves have a stronger scent than dried ones
- This is a low-cost, zero-risk addition but expectations should be modest
