Install motion-activated lights or deterrent devices

3

Place motion-activated lights, sprinklers, or predator deterrent devices around the coop perimeter. These startle approaching predators and can discourage casual visits from raccoons, foxes, and stray dogs. Solar-powered motion lights cost $15–$30 and require no wiring.

Why It Works

Nocturnal predators rely on darkness for cover. A sudden burst of light triggers a flight response in most animals. Predator-specific devices like Nite Guard solar lights use a flashing red LED that mimics the eye-shine of a larger predator, discouraging approach. Motion-activated sprinklers add a physical deterrent that works on both day and night visitors.

Tips

  • Relocate lights and devices every 2–3 weeks — predators habituate to static deterrents quickly
  • Use multiple deterrent types together (light + sound + water) for better results
  • Motion lights also help you spot predators during nighttime coop checks
  • Do not rely on deterrents as your only defense — they supplement, not replace, secure hardware and locked doors
