Treat coccidiosis with Amprolium (Corid)

4

Treat coccidiosis by adding Amprolium (brand name Corid) to the drinking water for 5-7 days following the dosage on the label. Coccidiosis is a parasitic disease that damages the intestinal lining, causing bloody droppings, lethargy, ruffled feathers, and death in severe cases. It is most common in chicks under 12 weeks old.

Why It Works

Amprolium blocks the coccidia parasite's ability to absorb thiamine (vitamin B1), starving it without harming the chicken. It is available over the counter at most farm supply stores and has no egg or meat withdrawal period at preventive doses.

Tips

  • Prevention is better than treatment: medicated chick starter feed contains low-dose Amprolium
  • Keep brooder and coop bedding dry — moisture accelerates coccidia oocyst development
  • Do not supplement vitamin B during treatment, as it counteracts the drug's mechanism
