Limit scratch grains and treats to 10% of daily intake

4

Restrict all treats — scratch grains, kitchen scraps, mealworms, greens — to no more than 10% of a hen's total daily food intake. Scratch grains contain only 7–9% protein compared to 16% in layer feed, so every bite of scratch displaces balanced nutrition. Overfeeding treats is the most common cause of reduced egg production and obesity in backyard flocks.

Why It Works

Hens preferentially eat treats over balanced feed. When treats exceed 10% of intake, protein and calcium levels drop below what's needed for consistent egg production. Obese hens also face higher risks of fatty liver hemorrhagic syndrome, a common and often fatal condition in overfed backyard chickens. Keeping treats modest ensures hens get the nutrition they need from their formulated feed.

Tips

  • Offer treats in the late afternoon after hens have eaten their fill of layer feed
  • One small handful of scratch per bird per day is a safe amount
  • Scatter treats in the run to encourage natural foraging behavior rather than piling in one spot
  • Healthier treat options: leafy greens, herbs, and mealworms provide more nutrition than corn-heavy scratch
